Welcome to an introduction to and for information about Artglassiam, in Chiang Mai Thailand.
I am a professionally trained stained glass artisan with 30 plus years of studio experience in Canada. My first commission was completed in 1975 while still in the Decorative Arts program at Sheridan College in Brampton, Ontario. After graduating in 1975 I undertook numerous small freelance commissions and various stained glass jobs until going into full time studio employment with Kaleido Glass, Mississauga in 1977. I also worked in the studios of Robert McCausland Memorial Windows, The Luxfer Studios and Excelsior Glass. I opened my own studio/retail business, Sundance Glass Studio, in 1987and ceased operation in 2000. Since that time time I have only undertaken occasional freelance commissions.
In 2010 I took a big step in moving to Thailand. I imported some of my private art pieces and, with some foresight, a box of stained glass related tools. In need of a pastime and noticing an obvious lack of stained glass art in the country I began to source out materials and supplies. I quickly became aware of a very short supply. There is a small wholesaler and a small studio in Bangkok, the studio combining their stained glass with draperies and upholstery, and the wholesaler having a very limited and very expensive selection of old, dusty glass and materials. There was no way to make glass work feasible with a 3-4 times the cost for similar materials in N. America so I began plans to import whatever I could gather together on a trip to Canada last year. So now I have a reasonable stock of quality materials and everything I need in tools and material to create with in my small home studio. A couple of small commissions came my way by word of mouth and I am currently exhibiting my first display of glass creations at the Sangdee Gallery and Cafe here in Chiang Mai. The show features 7 pieces of new work and 3 pieces that I imported to Thailand.
